Why the pet timeline starts months before your trip

Strict-rabies destinations like Japan, Australia, the UK, Hawaii and Singapore require months of pre-travel preparation: ISO microchip → rabies vaccination → 30-day wait → titer blood test → 180-day wait before entry (Japan, Australia, EU from a non-listed country). Skipping any step means quarantine on arrival — at the owner's cost, often 30+ days. The airline's cabin-vs-cargo policy is a separate filter: many carriers cabin-restrict to under 8 kg combined pet + carrier, and some embargo cargo in summer due to heat. ⚠️ Pet import rules change. This is a planning checklist — always confirm with the destination's veterinary authority and your airline 4–6 months before travel. Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are no longer recognised as a separate category by most airlines globally; you'll need a certified Service Animal qualification or book your pet under the standard pet policy.
