Flying with a pet on US airlines

Fees, carrier dimensions and cargo programs for the 13 US carriers, side-by-side. Updated for 2026.

⚠ Heads up on Emotional Support Animals. Since the DOT rule change in January 2021, ESAs are no longer protected under the Air Carrier Access Act and are treated as regular pets — meaning they pay the standard pet fee and must fit a carrier under the seat. Only trained Service Animals (psychiatric or otherwise) ride for free with a signed DOT form. Many travelers are still surprised by this.

⚠️ Pet policies change. This page reflects the carriers' published fees and dimensions as of May 2026. Carrier size limits are airline-specific — always measure your soft carrier compressed (not at its tag dimensions) and confirm directly with the airline at booking. Snub-nosed breed restrictions vary by carrier and route.
