Quick rules for flying with vape in carry-on and checked baggage. Verdicts and conditions across the major aviation regions below.
🇺🇸 United States (TSA)
Carry-on only — never in checked bags (battery fire risk). Must be turned off; no charging on board. Liquid cartridges count toward the 3-1-1 liquid rule.
🇪🇺 European Union (EASA)
Carry-on only across the EU — never in checked baggage (lithium battery fire risk). Must be turned off, no charging on board. Liquid cartridges and refill bottles count toward the 100 ml liquids rule.
🇬🇧 United Kingdom (CAA)
Carry-on only — never in checked. UK CAA: max 2 spare batteries per device, no in-flight use or charging. Liquids over 10 ml in TPD-compliant containers (UK regulates e-liquid bottle size to ≤ 10 ml).
🌎 Latin America
Carry-on only when permitted at the destination. BANNED in Argentina (since 2011), Brazil (since 2009 — possession + import illegal), Mexico (sales banned 2022; personal possession in legal grey area), Panama (banned 2009), Venezuela (banned). Allowed Colombia, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica with restrictions. Verify destination law before travelling.
🌏 Asia (ICAO / IATA baseline)
Strictly illegal in several Asian countries — possession alone can mean fines or jail. Thailand: BANNED since 2014, fines up to 30,000 THB and possible 10-year prison terms for import; tourists are regularly fined at airports. Singapore: BANNED, S$2,000 fine for possession on arrival. India: BANNED nationwide since 2019. Hong Kong: BANNED since 2022. Cambodia, Vietnam, Brunei: heavily restricted. Allowed in carry-on only in Japan (nicotine-free in most cases), South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia (with limits), Philippines, Taiwan. Always check the specific destination — when banned, do not travel with one.
🇦🇺 Australia & Pacific (CASA)
Australia: nicotine-containing vapes are prescription-only as of October 2024 — must travel with a valid Australian prescription or you can be fined and the device confiscated at the border. Non-nicotine vapes are allowed in carry-on only. New Zealand: nicotine vapes allowed (R18) in carry-on only. Pacific Islands vary — Fiji and Vanuatu have restrictions, declare on entry. Never in checked baggage anywhere (battery fire risk).
