Australia & NZ carry-on rules — what you can and can't bring

Australia (CASA) and New Zealand (MPI) have some of the world's strictest biosecurity regimes — declare ALL food, plant and animal products on arrival. Standard ICAO carry-on rules apply: 100 ml liquids, lithium batteries in carry-on only for spares. Penalties for undeclared food on arrival are A$2,664 (AU) or NZ$400 (NZ) and may escalate to AU$444,000 in serious cases.

The 5 things you need to know
- Declare EVERYTHING on the incoming passenger card. When in doubt, declare.
- Liquids: 100 ml in a 1-litre bag for international departures (some domestic relaxations).
- Lithium batteries ≤ 100 Wh in carry-on only. Powerbanks must be in carry-on, not checked.
- No fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy, untreated wood. Honey may need declaration.
- NZ MPI: dirty hiking boots and tent gear get inspected — clean before you pack.
